Chapter One:
All About Us.


Well first there’s Meriadoc Brandybuck. Meriadoc or “Merry” as he is better known was thirty six years old, he had fair light sandy brown curly hair atop his head and feet, Merry had Beautiful blue eyes and he was quite slim for a hobbit of his age, but he was still slightly chunky as he’d always been. Merry was four feet three inches tall (making him one of the tallest hobbit’s in recorded history). Merry was a Brandybuck, and his family was considered “queer” or strange. But I see nothing “Queer” or strange about Merry Brandybuck….

Secondly there’s Peregrin Took. Peregrin, well rather “Pippin” or even “Pip” was twenty eight years of age. He was still a tweenager. Pippin had emerald green eyes, and curly, dirty blonde hair atop his head and feet. Pippin was exactly four feet tall (also making him one of the tallest hobbits in recorded history). Pippin was very small and slender, but for Pippin, and only Pippin that was normal. Pippin was a Took his  family was also considered strange, but his family was rich. And his family seemed to be the group of hobbits that wanted to wander. But as everyone knows hobbits never have any adventures or do anything unexpected. At least that’s what I was told…

Now that you’ve met Merry and Pippin I guess it would only make scene for me to start this story….

Part I:Pippin's Annual Flu

“Pippin are you up this morning?” Merry said as he knocked on the door to Pippin’s house. After a few minutes Merry let himself in to Pippin house, figuring Pip must still have been asleep. “Pippin are you awake?” Merry asked again. No answer. Merry walked over to Pippin’s bedroom door and knocked on it “Hullo Pip, are you awake? Are you feeling any better then you have been?” Merry asked, Merry carefully opened the door, Pippin was still sound fully sleeping, pretty much as he had been for about two or three days now Merry looked around Pippin’s room. It was pretty trashed, but that’s what happened when Pippin was sick, everything went out of place, because for Pippin, everything has a place. “Now Pip, you simply cannot tell me your mother has been over yet, because if she had been I would recognize the fact that there is a floor somewhere in here” Merry said. Pippin stirred and slowly woke up “Merry? What are you doing here this morning?” Pippin asked sleepily “I came to check on you, and also to tell you what I’ve found” Merry said “What did you find Merry?” Pippin asked as he held his head “Frodo, he left Crickhollow to me and you! That’s what Frodo meant to tell us, that’s what he meant to give us. Before he left!” Merry said as he sat down next to Pippin’s bed “How do you know?” Pippin asked as he closed his eyes again “Sam, he found out and told me last night” Merry said “Pippin we always said we’d move in together that way we wouldn’t have to be apart, I don’t like being away from you, you don’t like being away from me. And we both love Crickhollow” Merry said “Merry I just want to sleep” Pippin said. Obviously he wasn’t thinking. Pippin pulled the covers to his chin and went back to sleep, he didn’t even care that Merry wasn’t done talking.  “Alright I get it. I’ll leave a note” Merry said to himself, he wrote a note and left it on Pippin’s bedside table. Then he left.

Pippin woke suddenly “What?” He asked himself though he didn’t know what he was asking about. “Oh my head” Pippin said to himself as he held his head. Pippin looked over at his bedside table “wha..?” he began as he saw the note left by Merry.

“Pippin, I came over on June the twenty eighth to make sure you were alright. I also came to inform you that Frodo left us Crickhollow. I tired to tell you, but you were still quite Ill and did not seem to be well enough to talk to me, let alone stay awake to listen to me. I will come over on July the third to see if you are any better do not fuss to get anything done, even if you are well I do not want  you to fuss if you are not well.

“July the third? That would be today I think… but If today is the third and Merry came over on June the twenty eight, then I’ve been asleep for almost a week!” Pippin said to himself. “Argh I don’t want to get up!” Pippin said as he pulled the covers back over his head. “I should probably get some tea started for afternoon tea” Pippin said as he sat up on his bed “Oi my room is a disaster!” Pippin exclaimed “Alas never mind I will deal with this later” Pippin told himself, though it drove him mad. Pippin opened his door and made his way to the kitchen “Hullo Pip” Merry said “Merry?” Pippin asked “I told you I was coming over today. I wasn’t sure weither you’d still be sick or not.” Merry said “What are you cooking?” Pippin asked “Soup want some?” Merry asked “I guess..” Pippin said "So… How much longer do you think you’ll be sick?” Merry asked “I think I’m better now, but this is record time I know that. How long has it been since I got sick?” Pippin asked “Oh I’d guess about…two weeks or so. But that’s just a guess, I know you’ve been in bed all week, and I hardly have seen you the past 2 weeks” Merry said “Oh” Pippin said “Yeah….” Merry trailed off “So………..Need help cleaning up?” Merry asked. “Ha! Yeah sure” Pippin said….




Part II: You Didn't Die (Pippin's Casket)


Pippin was cleaning his room when Merry walked in the door. “Merry! How are you?” Pippin asked. “Oh…Um Alright I guess” Merry answered. “Look! I’ve almost got my room re-organized!” Pippin told Merry who wasn’t paying much attention. Merry looked very upset, as though he were grieving, Pippin didn’t understand why. “Merry is something wrong?” Pippin asked worriedly. “Oh.. No.. not really” Merry responded. There was a few minuets of silence before Merry spoke up “Did you hear-” “About Lalaith?* Pippin asked “Yeah I did” Pippin said, looking down at the book in his hand. “It’s quite sad actually” Pippin begun “Even though she was my Niece, I hardly ever got to see her because of Nel’s husband” Pippin said “Pimpernel’s husband? What’s with him that kept you from seeing your niece?” Merry asked “He doesn’t like me, he didn’t even allow me to go to my own sister’s wedding, don’t you remember? I didn’t even know I had a niece until two years ago!” Pippin exclaimed. He took a deep breath and sighed “You going to the funeral?” Pippin asked “No, I’ve no right to be there. You?” Merry asked “Can’t. Even if I didn’t want to” Pippin said “She was five” Merry said quietly. Pippin sighed “I know” he said. “Half as old as you were” Merry said. “What are you talking about?” Pippin asked “Eh…” Merry trailed off. He had to tell Pippin sometime, he knew no one else would, and Pippin couldn’t be oblivious to something that nearly destroyed his life. With a sigh Merry said “Eh Pippin…. I.. I uh have something to show you” Merry said “Come on lets go” He said and Pippin followed. “Why are we in the old barn house?” Pippin asked “Remember that time when you were ten and you were deathly ill?” Merry asked “Yeah but what-” “Just! Just give me a moment” Merry snapped. “Sorry” Pippin said. “Do you remember what was so different about that time from all the other times you’ve been sick?” Merry asked “Yeah… I had constant headaches, and I’d been sick for geez… about three weeks” Pippin said “What was so different about how we all acted?” Merry asked. “Why is it so-” “Just answer!” Merry snapped “Sorry! Um I remember everyone was so sad around me. I never did find out why” Pippin said “That’s why” Merry said and pointed to a tiny casket on the ground. “A stupid casket? That’s all?” Pippin asked. “Looks like Sam’s Gaffer’s work” Pippin investigated the casket. “It is his work” Merry mumbled. “18 years ago today” Merry mumbled and Pippin could barely hear him. “Merry! What in Middle-Earth has gotten into you?” Pippin asked in a slightly jumpy voice. Never had Merry been this upset, well like this anyway. “Nothing!” Merry snapped, he was quick to give his lying answer. Pippin began to touch the casket, he traced his fingers over the designs on it “Who’s casket is this anyway?” Pippin asked. Merry breathed deeply “Yours” He said. Pippin snatched his hands away from the casket. “What?!” Pippin asked “When you were ten and that doctor had checked up on you, he told us that he knew you were going to die.  You just couldn’t survive, your immune system just wasn’t strong enough, and so your parents has this casket made for you” Merry said. “I remember after mum would leave my room, she would cry so much” Pippin said “And I did too, I wasn’t ready to lose you!” Merry said through tears. Pippin went over to Merry and hugged him. “Merry you didn’t lose me! And you won’t. Don’t you remember what happened that last day?” Pippin asked “Yes” Merry calmed down. “You walked out of your bedroom, blanket in one hand, and your teddy bear in the other and you asked “What’s for breakfast?” Merry recalled “Mum said I could have anything I wanted” Pippin said. “Merry do you remember what I said?” Pippin asked “Yes you said “Smiley face eggs and Mum made cookies” they said together. “Thanks Pip, for pulling through that time” Merry said “Well I had to” Pippin said “Why” Merry asked “For you” Pippin said “Lets go get breakfast” Pippin said and they left…..     

* Lalaith is a character from “Children of Hurin” she was Turin’s younger sister who died of the black shadow when she was three.


Part III: Merry's Accident



“Merry come on! I wanna trick-or-treat NOW!!!” Pippin hollered from the dinner table. “Soon Pippin it’s not time yet” Merry said. As he gave Pippin his lunch. “But I wanna go now!” Pippin whined “Well you can’t! Now stop this nonsense or I won’t take you!” Merry threatened. “Fine” Pippin pouted and begun to eat his sandwich. Merry had forgotten just how impatient ten year olds could be, especially Pippin. Who had no patients at all. As night approached Pippin got more restless until he went crazy about it. “Merry come on! Is it soon? I don’t know that I can take anymore waiting” Pippin said “Alright It’s time to go anyway” Merry said. Merry helped Pippin get ready and they left. Pippin made sure he got a treat from every house they went to. “Merry I wanna go to Stella’s house!” Pippin said. Merry stopped dead in his tracks. “Why?” He asked. “’Cause I wanna say Hi to Stella!” Pippin exclaimed. Merry knew that wasn’t the real reason. Merry liked Estella, and Pippin teased Merry about it all the time. He thought it was gross that Merry liked a girl (as any ten year old boy would think). “Merry please!!” Pippin begged and lashed out his puppy-dog pout. “NO! I am not going to fall for that again!” Merry said and shut his eyes. Pippin continued. Merry blinked an eye open. “NO! It burns!! STOP! Stop with the stare!!” Merry pleaded. “Then take me to Stella’s!” Pippin demanded. “You know Pip? One day your not going to be cute anymore” Merry said. “Really? Mommy says I’ll always be cute!” Pippin said “Well your not going to be cute enough to use that all your life!” Merry said. “Oh, I know. I’ll burn that bridge when I get to it!” Pippin retaliated. “Whatever” Merry laughed. They arrived at Estella’s house and Pippin knocked on the door. “Hello!” Estella exclaimed. “Trick-or-treat Stella!” Pippin exclaimed. “Would you like a treat too Merry?” Estella teased.  “Ha-ha! Don’t make fun” Merry said. “So why did you come all the way up here?” Estella asked. “Pippin wanted to say Hello” Merry said “And you didn’t?” Estella asked. “Stella…. Not tonight” Merry groaned. “Sorry. Well here you go Pippin. I’d let you visit longer, but I know you want to get more candy” Estella said “You bet!!” Pippin exclaimed and begun to run off. “Good luck Merry! And don’t fall down the hill” Estella said as left. Merry ran to catch up with Pippin “Wait Pippin!” He called.. Too late… Merry tripped on a rock and tumbled down the hill. “MERRY!” Pippin yelled when Merry hit the bottom “Merry are you hurt?” Pippin asked. “No Pippin I don’t think-” then Merry yelped with pain. His right ankle hurt to the touch. “I’ve broken my right ankle” Merry sobbed. “Does it hurt much Merry?” Pippin asked. “Yeah Pippin, it does” Merry said calmly. “Pippin, Go get Estella. Ask her if she’ll take you to finish your trick-or-treating” Merry told him. “No” Pippin said “No?” Merry asked “Yes, I want to stay with you” Pippin said. “I could help you home” Pippin said  “You sure?” Merry asked. The pain rising. “Yes Merry” Pippin said. And he helped Merry to his feet. He let Merry lean on him for support. “Thanks Pip” Merry said and Pippin helped Merry wobble home……
